A jovial and visibly delighted crowd joined acclaimed Filipino artists to begin the festivities of month-long Philippine International Arts Festival in celebration of the National Arts Month on January 31 at the Lapu-Lapu Shrine in Luneta Park, Manila.

Titled Salubong, the opening saw the wealth of talent from Filipino students who took to the streets to exhibit dance moves that are truly ours. University of the East Drama Company, Collective Arts Students and Thespians (University of Makati), Tanghalang Bagong Sibol (Malabon National High School), Harlequin Theater Guild (De La Salle University Manila), Teatro Marikenyo, and Dulaang Sipat Lawin danced during the parade from the Intramuros to the Lapu-Lapu Shrine.

The celebration also showed the fusion of traditional and regional arts and modern arts with performances by 2007 World Championship of the Performing Arts (WCOPA) grand junior performer of the world Aria Clemente, UP Dance Company, Next to Innocence, Bagong Dugo, and Makiling. Macoy Fondanes of the band Kenyo was the master of ceremonies. Musician Joey Ayala, also the head of the NCCA Committee on Music, performed for the crowd that gathered in Luneta.

Simultaneous with the opening at the Lapu Lapu Shrine were various dance groups who performed at the Concert at the Park Open-Air Auditorium, also at the Rizal Park. They were the PNU Kislap Sining Dance Troupe, Lahing Batangan Dance Troupe, Halili-Cruz Dance Company, Quezon City Ballet, USA Kawilihan Dance Troupe, Medal Kolon Latin, ADS School of Performing Arts, Sinukwan, and the Professional Dance Association.

The following day, February 1, the National Arts Month celebration likewise opened at the Malacanang Palace, with DepEd Secretary Jesli Lapuz, Climate Change Commissioner Heherson Alvarez, showbiz personality and PIAF 2010 spokesperson Richard Gutierrez, members of diplomatic corps from various countries, and Filipino artists in attendance. Performers were Gawad Kalinga Tatalon Performing Arts, Juan Luna Elementary School Children’s Chorale, Ramon Magsaysay High School Chorale, dance troupe, choral and rondalla of the Rizal Technological University, and 2009 WCOPA Grand Junior Performer of the World, Rhap Salazar.

The Halili-Cruz School of Ballet performs at the first leg of the Sayaw Pinoy held at the Rizal Park Open-Air Auditorium. Sayaw Pinoy is a touring concert and one of the flagship projects of the National Commission for Culture and the Arts (NCCA) for the National Arts Month celebration. The first leg of the concert is one of the numerous activities that marked the start of the month-long festivities.

The National Arts Month culminates on February 28 with the Ani ng Dangal, a recognition of artists whose works have been recognized by international award-giving bodies.
