Competition for the Making and Playing of Traditional
Kalinga Musical Instruments

Ten barangays of Lubuagan, Kalinga will be participating in a competition for the making and playing of traditional Kalinga musical instruments on May 3, 2008.

Project proponent Alonzo Saclag explains that the competition is meant to revive interest in Kalinga music and dances among the younger generations of the people of Kalinga. The participating barangays are Mabileng, Dangoy, Tanglag (Liglig), Tanglag (Sukiyap), Mabungtot, Upper Uma, Lower Uma, Western Uma, Poblacion, Barangay Canao,

The competition will have two components:

A. Traditional instrument-making in the following categories:

    1. Sagaypo
    2. Balinbing
    3. Tongatong
    4. Patang’og
    5. Ulimong
    6. Ulibew
    7. Tungali
    8. Olat

B. Playing of traditional Kalinga Music in the following categories

Solo playing:

  1. Sagaypo
  2. Balinbing
  3. Tongatong
  4. Patang’og
  5. Ulimong
  6. Ulibew
  7. Tungali
  8. Olat

 

Group of seven playing on the following:

    1. Sagaypo
    2. Balinbing
    3. Tongatong
    4. Patang’og

The organizers will provide one complete set of instruments to be used in the group competition.

Mechanics and guidelines:

Instrument Making Category (in the morning)

  1. Each contestant will be given a designated place to make the instruments.
  2. All materials needed including tools necessary to make these should be ready, to be checked by the judges, before the start of the competition.
  3. Contestants are allowed to use any indigenous materials and to decorate their musical instruments in accordance with Kalinga design patterns.
  4. Each contestant can only submit one entry per musical instrument.
  5. Contestants will be given until 12 noon of competition day to make the instruments.
  6. All the entries will be the property of the organizers.

Instrument Playing Category

  1. To test the skill and knowledge of contestants of their knowledge of traditional instrument playing and traditional music of the Kalinga. Playing will be limited to five minutes of actual playing. There will be two categories:

    1. Group instrument playing.(morning)
    2. Solo instrument playing (afternoon)

Winners will be announced and awarded after the competition for the instrument playing category. The competition will also showcase Kalinga crafts, costumes and instruments at the venue.
