"Society is a strong solution of books. It draws its virtue out of what is best worth reading, as hot water draws the strength of tea leaves." - Oliver Wendell Holmes

On Aug. 30, the Manila Critics Circle (MCC) held the 22nd National Book Awards at Megamall, coinciding with the 24th Manila International Bookfair participated in by all the country's publishers.

The big winner this year is the U.P. Printing Press, with it being named as Publisher of the Year. If there is the Best Picture awards for films, book publishers in the country has this award to look forward to. The award does not only recognize the number of publications printed but also the quality of the collective output for a given year. U.P. Printing Press is the publishing house for the University of the Philippines System, established by the Board of Regents on March 1, 1965. It has since published works of scientific, scholarly, or creative merit and publishes an average of 33 titles a year. This is already the second time U.P. Printing Press won the award after having been named Publisher of the Year by the Manila Critics Circle back in 1996.

The comic book Ang Kagila-gilalas na Pakikipagsapalaran ni Zsa Zsa Zaturnnah by Carlo Vergara won over perennial winner Arnold Arre. The comic book follows the story of a gay turned-superheroine, a first for the local comic kingdom. Young poet and 2001 winner Allan Popa shares this year's award for Best Book in Poetry with Elynia S. Mabanglo's Mesa Para sa Isa: Iba't-Ibang Tula, 1991-2001. Popa's collection titled Samsara is published by the Amado V. Hernandez Resource Center (incidentally, this year is the centennial birth anniversary of Amado V. Hernandez, celebrated with a series of activity starting September and culminating with the Gawad Ka Amado in December). On the other hand, Mabanglo's book was published by UST Publishing House. Of her book's title, Mabanglo says that she wrote it "dahil sa aking pag-iisa sa krusadang patuloy na makairal sa larangan ng pagtula sa Filipino sa isang bansang iilan o halos walang mambabasa nito" (because of my aloneness in a crusade that continues to persist in the field of Filipino poetry in a country where a few or almost none really reads it).

The Pinoy detective novel Smaller and Smaller Circles by F.H. Batacan won in the Fiction category together with Katrina Tuvera's Testament and Other Stories. Smaller and Smaller Circles has a Jesuit priest, and forensic anthropologist playing the role of the detective. The novel is also the recipient of the Grand Prize for English Novel in the Carlos Palanca Awards in 1999.

The groundbreaking collection Cogito Ergo Sum and Other Musings on Science, edited by Queena Lee-Chua, won in the anthology category winning over other finalists like Ravens in Love: An Anthology of Philippine Writing, and From This Day Forward: Widows and Widowers Write. The first of its kind in the country, (it includes Lee Chua's own Palanca prize-winning essay Cogito Ergo Sum, Or What I Know For Sure I Learned From Mathematics) writers in the collection give diverse perspectives on science.

The rest of this year's winners are as follows: Jose Honorato Lozano: Filipinas 1847 by Jose Maria A. Cariņo (Art); Memoirs of a Communist by Jesus B. Lava (Biography/Autobiography); Kape: A Philippine Coffee Cookbook by Vicky Veloso-Barerra and Chit U. Juan (Cookbooks and Food); Mga Dula sa Magkakaibang Midyum by Frank Rivera (Drama); The Critical Villa: Essays in Literary Criticism by Jose Garcia Villa edited by Jonathan Chua (Editing); The Philippine Forest: Our Living Heritage Karla P. Delgado (Environment); My Pledge of Love Cannot Be Broken and Other Essays on, Alas, More Fragile and Edible Things by Simeon Dumdum, Jr. and Whatever: A New Collection of Later Essays, 1987-2001 by Carmen Guerrero-Nakpil (Essay); the multi-volumes that includes Selected Essays on the Filipino and His Problems Today, Selected Studies in Philippine Colonial History, Selected Homilies and Religious Expectations, Selected Writings of His Youth, 1927-45 by Horacio de la Costa, SJ (History and Essay); Investigating Corruption: A Do-It-Yourself Guide by edited by Sheila Coronel and Lorna Kalaw-Tirol (Journalism); Supreme Court Decisions as Philosophy edited by Justice Abraham F. Concepcion Herrera vda. De Umali translated by Nita Umali Berthelsen and History of the Bisayan People in the Philippine Islands: Evangelization and Culture at the Contact Period (Part One, Book 1, Volume 1) by Ignacio Francisco Alcina, SJ, translated by Cantius J. Kobak, OFM (Translation); Anina ng mga Alon by Eugene Evasco (Young Adult Literature).
Citations were given to the Cavite Historical Society for sponsoring the publication of primary sources in historical writing, particularly Saloobin: Sagot ni Hen. Emilio Aguinaldo sa mga Paratang ng Dakilang Lumpo (2002) and Cavite en Siglo 19: Translation of Selected 19th Century Documents (2002). For promoting reading among Filipinos through the publication of popular novels, MCC awarded citations to the following publishers: Bookware Publishing Corporation, Books for Pleasure, Corazon Publishing, Lorimar Publishing, Pacyno Publishing, Precious Pages Corporation, S.G.E. Publishing and Universal Publishing.

The book awards is one of the major literary events in the country attended by respected and emerging writers and publishers. Seen during the affair were Cristina Pantoja-Hidalgo, who received the Publisher of the Year award and distributed invitations for UP Press’ grand launching of 40 new titles; Rene Villanueva, who allegedly walked out on the event because the MCC didn’t declare any winners in the children’s literature category despite the fact that the genre has published the most titles in the year; Iloilo-based writer John Iremil Teodoro, who flew to Manila to receive his Palanca award that would transpire two days later; MCC member Danton Remoto, who solicits support from fellow gay writers for their endeavor to field two gay Party-List candidates for congress; CCP visual arts department head Sid Gomez-Hildawa; journalist-poet-fictionist Roel Hoang Manipon, who is currently collecting his essays and journalistic writings into a book; gynecologist-poet Alice Sun-Cua with her ever supportive husband, Alex; among others.

The Bookfair runs for a full week.

History of the National Book Awards (taken from MCC's printed programme)

Founded in 1981, the Manila Critics Circle, Inc., is a non-profit, non-stock organization of professional literary critics and newspaper columnist who believe that Philippine books deserve much more attention than they usually get from business, media and the general public. Aside from giving the Annual Book Awards, the Circle has held an ASEAN-wide literary contest (in cooperation with Filipinas Foundation), participated in the nomination process for National Artist awards, joined National Book exhibits, prepared various position papers on literary publishing, and sat in the National Book Development Board. Members have done reviews for national and international periodicals, such as ASEAN Theater Journal, Asiaweek, Diyaryo Filipino, Filipinas, Filipino Magazin (Filmag), Independent, Journal of Asian Studies, Kinaadman, Manila Chronicle, Manila Times, National Book Review, Philippine Daily Globe, Philippine Daily Inquirer, Philippine Graphic, Philippine Journal of Education, Philippine Panorama, Philippine Star, Philippine Studies, Sun-Star Weekend, Unitas, and World Literature Today, and for television shows such as Mabuhay: This is Your Wake-Up Call.

Membership in the Circle is strictly by invitation; a unanimous vote is required before anyone is invited to become a member. Current members are: Juaniyo Arcellana, Fr. Miguel Bernard SJ, Isagani R. Cruz, Ruel de Vera, Virgilio Almario, Ophelia Alcantara Dimalanta, Resil B. Mojares, Danton Remoto, and Alfred Yuson. Former members were Arlene Babst-Vokey, Alice Guillermo, Doreen G. Fernandez (died 2002), Leonidas V. Benesa (died 1984), and Alfredo Navarro Salanga (died 1988),

Every year since 1982, the Circle has given the National Book Awards to the best books written, designed and published in the Philippines. In addition, the Circle also gives Special Awards to outstanding publishers or publishing projects and Citations for outstanding achievement in special categories. In 1995 and 1996, the awarding ceremonies were telecast over PTV. No book written or edited by a member is eligible to win a National Book Award; instead, the Circle gives Members' Awards to its members who publish books.  Trophies for the awards were designed and donated by Eduardo Castrillo(1981-83), Agnes Arellano (1984-87), Cesare and Jean Marie Syjuco (1989-91), Edgar Doctor (1992), Gino Gonzales (1993-95), and National Artist Napoleon Abueva (1996-99).
